The story of Mar Seafood dates back to the mid-60’s when Victor Bica Sr decided it was time to move to the United States. By the early 70’s Victor was just
getting started in the industry as a quahogger. Everyday he would take his boat through the Narragansett Bay and hand rake for wild clams, mussels, and oysters. By the mid 80’s his son Victor Jr and his soon to be son in law, Jose Fernandes, became deck hands. Over the next couple of years they came to realize there was a demand for their catch, and it was the Portuguese and Spanish restaurants in the New York and New Jersey areas. For several years, all three began shipping product into these areas every day,
creating relationships that we still hold to this day.
When both Victor Jr and Jose had finished school, it was time to take their small
operation to the next step. In 1991, Mar Seafood Inc. opened their doors to the world for the sale of fresh wholesale shellfish. Within a couple of years, the three had created the first and only, at the time, wet storage purification system approved by the FDA in
the country. With knowledge and experience, Mar Seafood was able to become one of
the largest distributors of clams, mussels, and oysters in the country, and supplying markets, grocery stores, and food distributors in the United States and in Europe.
For over 30 years now, Mar Seafood has met every customer’s needs, supplying
fresh shellfish daily. Today, Victor Sr works alongside Victor Jr and Jose creating new opportunities and teaching the three grandsons, the third generation, everything they
know.
